concrete mathという言葉

　弾さんの【404 Blog Not Found:Stiffと偉大なプログラマー達-プログラマーと数学・物理】で見かけた「concrete math」という言葉。調べてみたところ、あのKnuth先生（→【ドナルド・クヌース - Wikipedia】）らが書いた本の題名らしいですね（asin:0201558025）。で、そのほんの紹介文に

Concrete Mathematics is a blending of CONtinuous and disCRETE mathematics. "More concretely," the authors explain, "it is the controlled manipulation of mathematical formulas, using a collection of techniques for solving problems."

という記述が。連続＆離散数学でかつ実際に使える、といった意味合いらしいです。うーん、うまく訳すのは難しそうですな…。
